This year we commemorate a centennial-birthday of our beautiful National Park Services. As far the beautiful nature amazes you while you are hiking, watch out the wild habitat living in the Park. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park Wildlife Management track 1,500 black bears in the area. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park runs from Tennessee to North Carolina. Please check out the Park’s website for the alerts before you go. The posting of Black Bears Safety information can be found in the following link – https://www.nps.gov/grsm/learn/nature/black-bears.htm What do bears like? the scents and food smell. Bears are omnivore as human being. They eat berries and nuts more than the meat. It sounds a healthy diet, doesn’t it? Even though they have heavy body but they are capable to do triathlon activities, i.e. running, climbing, and swimming. Bears are loners and active in early morning and late evening in Spring and Summer. They mate in July and do not believe in a monogamous relationship. Either female or male bears have more than one mate.

In Winter, bears can hibernate for 3 to 8 months depending on the habitat they live in. In March and early April, female bears with cubs normally get out from the hibernation. Female bears will stay with cubs for 18 months and after that they mate again. The American black bears have smaller body than the brown bears. As a comparison, a black bear can have a weight up to 400 pounds while a brown bear may have a double weight of a black bear. The appearance of black bear sometimes fools us. For example the cinnamon- colored bear at the YellowStone National Park. This cinnamon- colored bear is also a part of the black bear species. For sure, we do not want to approach bears while hiking at the National Park. Since bears are loners and like to have their own spaces, try to make distance with bears at least 150 feet. Bears tend to not harming people. Only when they feel insecure, especially for female bears with cubs, they may come to attack human. When bears stand up with two legs, it does not mean they start an aggressive movement. It is bears’ curious behavior.
